I forgot to mention that I've been drinking 22 Sierra Simunition coffee the last few days. They call their decaf Simunition. Since decaf isn't 100% caffeine-free, it's not shooting blanks, but it's close. ;)  Simunition isn't a bad name for it. It simulates regular coffee, bur has less muzzle energy.

22 Sierra Coffee Co. was founded in April of 2020 by two Veterans striving to make a difference.  Based in Mount Vernon, MO, we have established ourselves as a national brand through our partnerships and unique approach to making our givebacks part of our overhead.  Why? Because we believe in integrity and accountability, both of which can be missing from a "portion of profit" model.  We transparently donate $0.50 from each packaged coffee product sold to the Grunt Style Foundation to support their efforts.

The Mission:

The mission of 22 Sierra Coffee Co. is to provide specialty grade coffee to members and supporters of the military, veteran, and first responder communities and leverage strategic and impactful partnerships to enhance camaraderie, improve the post-service health of veterans, and prevent veteran and first responder suicide.

Our Shield Logo:

The Name - "22” is the number most commonly used when discussing veteran suicide. The name 22 Sierra is a play on the Army MOS format although it is not a real MOS. Putting “22” in the name serves as a constant reminder our company has a purpose that we pledge to never lose sight of.

The Shield - This represents the Defenders of our country and our communities.  The shield pays respect to the military, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical service professionals working each day to keep America safe.

The Rooster - The rooster is our touch of humor.  It's an ice breaker.  It can represent the morning if you want it to, but for us, it's just a way to have fun.

The Stars - The first two stars represent the two friends we have lost to suicide.  The third represents all the others.

A smoked turkey sandwich and a ham sandwich from Honeybaked Ham for dinner. Breakfast was 4 lemon paczki covered with powdered sugar.

Leftover King Cake from Joe Gambino's Bakery in New Orleans, The King of King Cakes. It's like the one in the upper right of the first pic. They make custom cakes for all ocassions too, like this grooms jambalaya cake. And they partnered with Cocktail & Sons to make Gambino's King Cake Rum Cream. You can have your cake and drink it too.

Gambino's is pretty darn good.  Especially when fresh.  Some people prefer this small shop king cake:

Tortilla chips and chili cheese dip. The dip was 1 can of Wolf brand chili - no beans, the last piece of my horseradish cheese, and all of my smoked hot pepper cheese, except for 1 piece I thought would fill the bowl too close to the top when I stirred it. The tortilla chips were tough and kind of chewy, not crispy, but after I gnawed on a few I had an idea. I have a toaster oven in the next room. 8)  The shortest time I can set the air fryer for is 5 minutes and the lowest temperature is 180 degrees, but that's not hot enough. Five minutes at 300 or 310 degrees is enough to crisp up a bunch lying on the baking rack. And when I open the door of the toaster oven, the fresh, hot tortilla smell is SO good! I ate a whole bag of chips and have one more bag just like it. And some dip left over.  Unfortunately, they didn't just taste too salty, my lips hurt after eating so many of them.

Ezekiel bread is one of those things I thought about trying a long time ago but never did. I don't know why. I probably didn't see it in the store, or didn't want to pay what they were asking for it.

I had a Cinnamon Pecan Streusel Rum Cake and a Chocolate Chocolate Chip Rum Cake this morning. I got them at Honeybaked Ham on Valentine's Day when I bought one sandwich and got one free.

My leftover chili cheese dip is in the microwave. I added another can of chili no beans, the last piece of smoked hot pepper cheese, and a bunch of all natural pepper jack cheese from a 2.42 pound package I just opened. It was a package of trimmings I bought and tossed in the deep freeze last year. Now I have to see if my second bag of tortilla chips is okay or if they need to be baked.

Even though one of my doctors doesn't want me drinking coffee, not even decaf, I feel the urge to be caffeinated sometimes. So I made a whole pot of coffee, 12 5-ounce(?) cups, and used 6 scoops of Simunition and 6 of Irreverent Warriors Dark Humor from 22 Sierra. They partnered with Grunt Style Foundation for that. With a whole scoop of grinds for each cup of coffee I really didn't need to press the "Bold" button on the coffeemaker. But I'm still trying to figure out how much coffee to use since I'm used to a different grind. This is more of a general purpose grind, instead of a finer grind for drip coffeemakers. The Dark Humor is a medium-dark roast which is my style and I bet it's great by itself. It looks like it was a one-off deal they made. It's coffee I feel good about drinking. I can tell my my doctor I'm just helping out.  ;)

Short Shorts Save Lives | Irreverent Warriors

It's Saturday and you're driving down the street.  You see them in plate carriers waving flags.  Your heart starts beating a little faster and the curiosity sets in.  You ask yourself, 'What the f*ck are all these half-naked people doing?'.  Well, the answer is quite simple if you think about it.  But first, you need some context.

Naked and Afraid

For many military members and veterans, it starts at the Military Entrance Processing Station, or MEPS.  As part of MEPS, we are asked to strip down to our underwear and "duck walk" (that's the official term) around the room so doctors can analyze us for joint issues or whatever.  Maybe it's just for their own enjoyment.  Nonetheless, in that moment, we met some people for the first time while walking around like a duck in our underwear.  Can you imagine the awkwardness?

Chances are, the fellow recruits we meet at MEPS are not the ones we go on to serve with.  It's just the first moment where we felt vulnerable and uncomfortable.  Fast forward to arriving at boot camp, basic training, or whatever the respective branch calls it.  If anybody tells you they weren't feeling vulnerable or anxious when the door to the bus opened and the yelling started, they are lying.  For the vast majority, this is our first time away from what makes us comfortable.  Whether it's close friends, family, or a dog, the thing in your life you found comfort in is not there.  Despite being with 50+ other people, at first, you feel alone.

The first 24-48 hours there is designed to be chaotic, disorientating, and stressful.  At some point during this time, there is a need to shower.  In the Air Force in 2011, this first shower came on the day we handed over our civilian clothes in exchange for our uniforms and, for males, had our heads shaved.  It was anything but a "shower".  All 50 or so of us crammed naked into the latrine, being yelled at the whole time, while 10-15 people at a time got 60 seconds to share six or eight shower heads.  I remember the shower heads either being scolding hot or ice cold.  Either way, it forced you to only stand under the water for a second before you had to step back and bump into another naked person behind or beside you.  Again, this period of time is when recruits, or trainees as the Air Force called us, feel the most vulnerable and uncomfortable.  Are you catching on to the significance of this feeling?

Isolated and Alone

As you probably know, military members and veterans often use humor to cope with stressful or traumatic situations or these instances where we are uncomfortable and vulnerable.  These situations and instances are not limited to being naked; this is just a metaphor.  There are situations and experiences that are unique to the military that only other military members and veterans can relate with.  We are able to joke about it to make each other laugh as a way to heal.  The problem is, when veterans separate the military, they often feel alone and isolated because civilian friends, family, and new co-workers just can't fill that void.  We no longer have people who understand and relate to this in our daily lives.  It's uncomfortable to open up and talk about our experiences with others as it is, but when the people in our lives can't relate to what we have been through, we feel isolated and alone.  For some, this leads to suicide.  That's where Irreverent Warriors comes in.

The Silkies Hike

Irreverent Warriors, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that was started by Donny O'Malley back in 2015.  What started as a 22km ruck, carrying 22kg of weight, to raise awareness for the 22 a day quickly turned into a place where veterans could regain that sense of camaraderie and build a network of peers who could relate to each other.  A place for suicide prevention rather than awareness.  That place is called a Silkies Hike.

Silkies, or Ranger Panties as others may refer to them, are the PT shorts of the Marines.  They are short, tight, and leave nothing to the imagination.  In public, it can be uncomfortable to wear them.  Wearing Silkies is a way to recreate that discomfort of being naked (remember the shower story?), and according to O'Malley, this is why Silkies are worn at hikes.  When a veteran or military member shows up to a Silkies Hike, especially a first-time hiker, they aren't alone in this feeling.  They are with a group of brothers and sisters who are also feeling uncomfortable.  Vulnerable.  So, what do we do?  We laugh.  And once the laughter makes us feel comfortable, we talk.  And when we talk, we relate.  We find friends who have felt the same pain, seen the same tragedy, or experienced the same trauma.  We find out we're not alone.  What makes IW great is it doesn't just stop when the hike is over.  Each location has a Facebook Group as a way of staying in contact with others from the hike.  But it's more than that; it's a network of peers we can talk to when we need it and we know they can relate our struggle.  It's a judgement-free place where any veteran can connect with other veterans.  To date, over 50,000 veterans have participated in Silkies Hikes across the world, with almost 100 Hikes scheduled for 2022 alone.

So, the next time you're driving through town on a Saturday and you see a group of half-naked people wearing plate carriers, carrying flags, and most importantly, laughing, cheer them on.  Honk and wave.  It's just a group of veterans and military members helping each other heal.  Helping each other live.

I'm eating hot peri-peri wings. The hot sauce doesn't char like that barbecue sauce did the other day because it doesn't have any sugar in it.

Ingredients: Vinegar, Water, Lemon Puree, Onion Puree, Salt, Spices (African Brid's Eye Chilli, Paprika, Cayenne Pepper), Green Chilli, Sunflower Seed Oil, Garlic, Xanthan Gum, Propylene Glycol Alginate (Derived from Seaweed), Preservative (Ascorbic Acid), Rosemary Extract.

I'm on my 2nd hotel room plastic cup of Jagermeister. This will 1/2 of a 750ml bottle gone when I finish it. I found this in my mom's basement last year, maybe the year before, and stuck it in my freezer awhile back. I finally worked up the courage to try it and it tastes like... Jagermeister!  ???  It has a price tag on it that says 190 tax-free and has the price is $16.17. I just looked online and several places charge $20-$30 for a fifth of this stuff. The number 190 means it was bought at a duty-free shop or somewhere else that didn't charge taxes on it. Like a Class VI liquor store on a military base. Worst-case scenario is, I picked it up when I renewed my army ID card at Fort Custer Training Center or Selfridge ANG Base, whichever one I went to in 1984. :o  BTW, they've both been active for 107 years. More likely, it's from a trip my mom and I made to a casino in Canada, Probably the river boat they had in Windsor. Each adult can bring back 1 liter of liquor tax free, plus a certain number of non-Cuban cigars, and cigarettes. I think I got a bottle of Asbach Uralt German brandy (like fine cognac), and the second bottle could have Jagermeister. Since my mom doesn't drink, she would have declared one bottle as hers. I remember doing that before but it's been a LONG time since we went to Canada. Before 9/11 I guess, since I've never had a passport (but have been to 4 foreign countries). The back of the bottle says it was imported by Sidney Frank Importing Co., and when I looked them up, I found out they've been a wholly owned subsidiary of Mast-Jägermeister SE since 2017. So this stuff has been lying around for at least 7 years, and maybe 33-40 years, but it hasn't gone bad as far as I can tell. Unlike the set of tiny bottles of whiskey and stuff that was in her attic. I brought that home and dumped them all out because they smelled more like paint thinner than whiskey, etc. In case anyone is wondering, Jagermeister is best served at -18 Commie degrees which equals -0.4 Freedom degrees.

They're selling pre-mixed Asbach and cola in cans now, but it's only 10% alcohol. Mama Claire used to serve Sarge and I a "spritz" down at Claire's Pub that I think was a shot of Asbach and a shot of cola in a glass that looked like a miniature brandy snifter. That would be 18% alcohol, or 36 proof.
