David Spade helps Phoenix police buy rifles
Monday, December 22, 2008 5:48 PM EST
The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Phoenix Police Department has gotten some high-powered goodies courtesy of actor David Spade.

The one-time Phoenix resident donated $100,000 so that the department can buy approximately 50 AR-15 rifles.

Spade said he wanted to make the donation after seeing a TV news report about Phoenix officers having to buy their own rifles. Spade grew up in the Phoenix area and graduated from Arizona State University.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Alan Hill says the rifles will be given to patrol officers and that the agency was grateful for the gifts.

"These guys need to be able to do their jobs and I am just happy I could help," Spade said in a statement released by his publicist.

I take back everything I ever said about him.  ;)
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Well, I guess the weaselly-lookin' little dude did OK.

Go figure.

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

Yer all looking only at a result, not the reason.  What if he is a gun grabber that thinks ONLY cops and military should have guns?  Just cause we like this action does not mean he is a friend.

That's a distinct possibility. I posted this story cause I thought at least a celeb was helping the cops, not obstructing them. I don't know if the Phoenix PD respects private gun owners or thinks they're part of the problem. Not all cops are pro-2A, with the exception of the guns they need for their work. Look at the New Orleans PD during Katrina. Also, if the cops needed the rifles so bad they made their officers pay for them, why didn't go to the city council to expand their operating budget or find some other form of revenue generation to pay for the weapons. Maybe the citizens don't want the police to have the rifles for whatever reason.

Either way he helped the good guys fight the bad guys on equal terms or better in a time of need.  It's not the first time he's helped out that PD.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. The only thing you can’t do is ignore them

Merry Christmas David Spade - you done good.
Thank you form someone that may never meet you , or may never go to Phoenix.
But thank you none the less.

I have to disagree, whatever David Spades political leanings may be, (I have no idea ) these actions are in line with the conduct of our forefathers. If your town needed a school teacher then every one pitched in some money to hire one, if you needed a bridge the folks of the town made appropriate donations of material, money, or labor.
In that tradition Mr. Spade saw a need in his community and instead of waiting for "the Govt" to do something he stepped up and contributed a resource he had available.
Whether he agrees with us on the gun rights issue or not we would be better off if more people acted in this manner. If you see a need in your community, and you have the appropriate resources, don't stand around saying, "Gee, someone should take care of that." Act.
