Brady Rates States by Gun Control
« on: February 06, 2009, 08:49:09 AM »
The Brady Bunch has release their 2008 report ranking the states by gun control.   Not surprisingly California rank #1.  They didn't rate DC but I suspect it would have rated higher than California so I added them as a zero ranking*.

http://www.stategunlaws.org/xshare/pdf/scorecard/2008/2008_scorecard_rankings.pdf

What does this mean?

 NOTHING

If you plot the gun control ranking verses the violent crime ranking there is NO correlation.  The plots are all over the place which indicates that gun control has no effect on crime.  There are other reasons for the crime rates than the availability of guns.  The trend line is almost flat.  (I'll provide a graph later.)

Here's the comparison of Brady Gun Control ranking for 2008 (low number means high gun control), and the FBI Uniform Crime Report ranking for Violent Crime Rate 2007 (latest numbers available) (low number mean high in crime).  (Duplicate numbers means a tie)

I don't understand how they could rank NH at tied at 23, the only states with better gun laws are Vt. and Alaska.

You'll have to go read their criteria.   See:

Isn't it interesting that 2 of the States with the most lax gun laws also have the lowest crime rates, (NH 49 - Vt 50 ) They are also the ones with the lowest % of ethnic minorities.

This is from a page on there web site titled Major School Shootings since 1997

They list 9 events

3 were plots (no shots fired)

3 were drive by shooting after school was out

2 were at universities

1 was an accident with a blank gun for a play

only 1 was a child killed by another student

talk about making up stats

Okay here is a graph of the data.  Granted.  The Brady Gun Control Ranking is from 2008 and the Crime Rate Ranking is from 2007, but not a lot changed.   What it shows is there is no coorelation.  NOTE:  This only compares Brady's definition of good gun control versus violent crime rate.  IT DOES NOT compare the impact of gun ownership.
