Episode #8: Convenience Store

Lucky for me the DVR saved an episode of the Best Defense last night since I was in a meeting. Watched it today and loved the discussion on the scenario of a convenience store robbery. The part of being the witness was highly stressed but one thing that came to mind was the use of cell phone to notify authorities if not confronted by the perp. I do not believe I would have thought of that being in that particular situation cause I would have been reaching for a handgun instead of a cell phone in case things turned really bad. This was a perfect scenario that could happen to anyone. Great job.

The moving to adjust the lanes of fire as well as getting off of the "X" was great emphasis in that show last night!

That was the first I had seen and I thought it was great and my wife ended up watching with me and it was a great one from a discussion standpoint of the difference in being aware in the situation and we talked about how in scenario one why you don't want your hands up or once you are to that position (hands visible) you are basically surrendered and it isn't the right time to change your mind.
Have it dialed up on the DVR now for regular recording.

In the second scenario, the guy with the CCW turned his back to draw. I don't know if I would have taken my eye's off the BG. Was this a move done for the situation and for what reason?

He didn't really "turn his back" to draw. The idea was to "prep" the draw discreetly by blading to the threat and getting a preliminary grip. The demo of this was faster than it should have been. It should be a slow, subtle movement that won't attract attention. The demonstrator is a uniformed law enforcement officer and a good shooter, but the concept was new to him.

Sneaky draws--with all weapons--are a great skill set and lots of fun to practice. Everyone likes the high-speed draw, but a dicsreet "sooner" is often better than an overt "faster."

I noticed the demonstrator pulled his weapon, reholstered, and then drew again.  Did I see something different then what he did?  Blading to the threat was smart.  Narrowed his profile, plus kept his away hand out of view.

I just watched the sequence again on the DVR.... What you are actually seeing is him adjusting the jacket. He didn't "draw and reholster" as I saw it, he "gripped, realized he had the jacket tangled up, released and re-gripped".

Take another look if you get the chance on DVR, in re-runs or on DVD (if we get that worked out in the future).
