Leatherman issue and need help!
« on: November 05, 2009, 03:39:03 PM »
I have a Leatherman Surge and while at the grave of my daughter, I was trying to trim the stems of the "fake" flowers my wife and I had just purchased for Her first winter. The Surge could not complete the task and I have now ruined the ability to open/close the pliers with one hand because of the hardwire cutters are grooved almost a full millimeter in two different spots. I can not figure out how to post a pic of the pliers, sorry. Any suggestions or help would be nice. I have all ready purchased a SOG  but have been told that Leathermans have the ability to cut harder metal. Seems silly to carry boltcutters around for the J.I.C. but it is the only thing i can think of.

Thanks,
tex

Very sorry to hear about your daughter. I will light a candle for her Sunday. As far as the leatherman, I haved owned one original and a few clones. My basic impression is that they are like a swiss army knife. Not particularly good at doing anything, but good enough to do at least a half assed job of doing everything, which puts you miles ahead of where you would be without one. For tough jobs like cutting heavy wire, you want a pair of dykes (no bad porn jokes please).

Contact Leatherman.

I'm sure they will make it right with you.

I have to concur with Rat on this one. However I will add this I have a multi tool made by Leatherman, SOG, and Gerber, and the one I have found the most reliable is my Gerber.

I've been carrying a Leatherman for nearly 20 years with excellent service.
I have abused it beyond the ordinary and that is what has kept me from ever even considering checking into the warranty (25 year, I think).

I did the same thing as texcaliber many years ago while cutting fence wire. The wire bent the cutting edges inward enough that the pliers wouldn't open or close easily. I didn't want to send it back, so I just took a small grinding bit in a Dremel tool and re-ground the edges until it worked again.

“Now you’re ready”

Seems to me that I could not ask for more from the Company but I am still in need of a pocket/EDC system that can cut. Now remember I was not cutting fences or harden nails. This was a very important but simple task of rubber coated metal flower stems. I have two almost perfect circles in the cutting edge that is close to the teeth on the Pliers "teeth part" in looks.

Cutting heavy wire is tough duty, look at the gauge of plastic flowers. I wouldn't try it with regular needle nose. You want a set of dykes or tin snips, same as cutting fencing. Its good that they seem to be a stand up company, but frankly, the wire cutters were probably designed for wire fishing leaders and not much more. You are getting more than your moneys worth if they replace it.

Leatherman will make it right. There are few American Companies left with that kind of service.  I have a Kershaw version, and had to send it back for a failure of the adjustable screw for the vice grip feature. Got it back in 2 weeks.

If it's 10-12-14 gauge, that could be tough for a multi tool, but if Leatherman repairs or replaces it, good.

Truly very sorry for the loss of your daughter.
